Description
This old southern dogtrot cabin near Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, was built in the mid 19th century. During the Civil War, it was used as a hospital. It has gone through many changes througout the years. A dogtrot has a breezeway cutting through the house, usually in the middle. With dogtrot houses, the rooms are called pens. This dogtrot has two rooms on each side, for a total of four. Dogtrot houses were still widely used throughout the South for much of the Twentieth century. Many of the houses were enclosed, and dogtrots are not common today.
.................................
Every year in April, Civil War Re-enactors come to Pleasant Hill and camp on the battle grounds, behind this old house. There is a lot of drama as they act out the bloody, sad battle and the horrors of the type of medical care that must have occurred afterward. Cannons roar, and explosions are deep and resonating.
.................................
I get a feeling of nostalgia with these old cabins. Several families have lived in this house, which has become known as the O'pry/Elam house. One cannot help but think about the good times and bad, glad times and sad, that this house has seen. It is certainly a historical place.
.................................
About the art itself: This artwork was hand painted; the original is an acrylic painting on stretched canvas. Colors are rust, orange, green, blue, gray, white, and hints of brown. It features a dogtrot cabin in a southern winter landscape.
