This portrait of an African American Saint Nicholas was done with Inktense pencils, which become watercolor when a wet brush is applied. Colors are blue, brown, green, red, and white. The look on his face is almost neutral, but still kind. His beard curls and lays on hist chest.

Around the Christmas holidays, Santa Clauses of all types appear in stores, on streets, and in our hearts. The prototype for Santa was Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara. He was raised in a wealthy, Christian home, and lost his parents when he was still young. He sold his possessions, and lived a life of serving the Lord. He became known for his generous and giving nature. It's beginning to sound familiar, isn't it?
.................................................
Nicholas was exiled and imprisoned under the hand of the ruthless Roman Emporer, Diacletian. He was eventually released, and later attended the famous Council of Nicaea. Nicholas died in December of AD 343. I find it amazing that the spirit of this generous Christian man has endured for all these long centuries.
