Description
There is a certain time of the evening when the sunset shines on downtown Shreveport in a glowing, beautiful way. In 2004, I painted an abstract version of the cityscape. This is a reproduction of that painting.

If you get a larger version of the piece and stand closely, you can see thick brush strokes in some places and canvas texture in others. Step back, and it all comes together.

Shreveport, originally known as Shreve's Town, was founded by Captain Henry Miller Shreve. Shreve is known for the clearing of the Red River Raft, a 150 to 200-mile long matting of logs and other plant matter. The Raft had been there longer than anyone could remember, probably hundreds of years. It was said that a man could ride a horse over the raft in some places without getting wet. It was not continuous; it was a series of log jams, which created nearby lakes and rendered the Red un-navigable. If you find it as interesting as I do, perform an internet search for the Red River Raft. You will find a trove of information.

The hand painted art consists of a four-lane street, or highway, which is in the area of Interstate 20 and Youree Drive, which is Highway 1. The buldings, or towers, are abstracted, although most have visible windows. Colors are yellow, green, gray, blue, pink, and orange. You can see cars on the freeway. The sky is flaming yellow, with hints of other colors. At this time, I was in the habit of signing my initials to the piece, as in V. L. De Lude.
