Description
In a patriotic scene, a flag hangs from a pole decked in wrought iron at the park at Cane River Lake in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Flowers hang from the pole and lounge chairs and a boat can be seen across the water, which framed by the bridge and the flag pole. This park sits below street level, and features, among other things, a flower garden, benches, and the Roque House, a historical Creole style dwelling.

Natchitoches (NAK-e-tash) is the oldest continual settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. It was named after an Indian tribe. Natchitoches was founded in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, to whom large numbers of Louisianians trace our ancestry. A Quebec Frenchman who married a Spanish girl from Mexico, his history is colorful and worth a look.

The street that runs on the upper level along the lake is brick, and an important part of the history of Natchitoches. Contrary to popular belief, Cane River is not a river, but a horseshoe lake that was formed when the Red River changed course.
