Description
This male portrait is a pointillism drawing, drawn with acrylic paint, using dots instead of strokes. The man was playing volley ball at a family reunion, and having a great time. They had played several games by then, and all were tired, but no one was ready to quit.

Colors used in this artwork were white, blue, black, yellow, and red. The sun was shining brightly, splashing sunshine onto the subject, causing a high contrast of light and shadow. Pointillism can be exciting and tedious at the same time. I always looked forward to painting this artwork, but while painting it, I often had the urge to get up and run. I should say, "while dotting this work," instead of "while painting it." The painting slash drawing consists entirely of dots of various sizes, placed strategically to give the effect of the previously mentioned light and shadow. Click on the painting for the localized large resolution view, and you can get a better look at the technique.

This painting has a dual nature in another way, also. During close views, the art seems abstract. Step back, and the realism shines through the stylized abstraction. As a final note, this work is made available by permission of the poser.
