Description
This historic old house stands near Mansfield, Louisiana. It is very close to the Mansfield Battle Park, and served as headquarters for Union General Banks during the Battle of Mansfield. It is known as the Allen House, and according to direct descendant Jeff Allen, the house was built in the 1840's by Alphronson Allen.
..................................................
This work began life as an acrylic painting. The main colors are green, blue, white, and that rust red that gives you the tin roof. The house is said to have been used by Union General Banks as headquarters during the Battle of Mansfield which of course, was part of the Civil War. As an aside, there is a nearby dogtrot, also in my Louisiana gallery, which served as a hospital in the Battle of Pleasant Hill.
...............................................
The current owners of the home, descended from Mr. Allen, have donated the house as a historical monument. I'm glad this home will be preserved, but some of them are not. At least, I can reproduce them in paint, and play a part in the legacy of the past.
...................................................
And here is a wonderful post script. Another descendant will have the painting. Jeff Allen, a three-times great grandson of original owner Alphronson Allen, now owns the original artwork. I like to think of it as history coming home.
