Description
About the art: Meet the historic McNeill Street pumping station in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana. This hand painted piece is an oil painting on stretched canvas, 16x20 inches. This visit occurred on a cloudy day and the bricks were a deep, rich red. Main colors are deep red, green, gray, and white. The front of the pumping station is featured in a somewhat sharp perspective. There are industrial style windows and you can see through some of the windows, through windows on another wall. Please contact Lenora De Lude with any questions.
..............................
I have learned much about the station at McNeillstreet.org. Located on the banks of Cross Bayou, this building housed Shreveport's original waterworks. The facilities, including steam driven pumps, were installed in 1887. These steam pumps operated for almost 100 years, retiring in 1980. Parts of the system, along with additions, continued to operate until 1994.

Such pumping stations were once common in the USA, but they have gone by the wayside of history. According to the afore-mentioned website, it is speculated that two of the station's Worthington pumps could be the sole survivors of their types. In fact, there is much vintage technology to be found at McNeill. The site also states the following: "Water filtration was begun at McNeill in 1890 when fewer than 10% of the nations water plants were providing filtered water." I find that interesting.

I have been to the pumping station twice. It is a remarkable place, full of character and nostalgia. I am so glad that it has survived the years.
