Old Louisiana Plantation Oak Tree
Artist
Lenora De Lude
Medium
Painting - Oil
Description
This old oak tree sits on the grounds of the Magnolia plantation near Natchitoches, Louisiana. The tree is so old that the limbs have grown to the ground, where they once again turn upward, having given way to the earth beneath. The greenery clinging to the limbs is called resurrection fern. It turns brown in dry weather, but springs back to green life after a rain.
................................
There is nothing quite like being among old trees, trees that are so old that they reach for the ground and bounce upward. Each huge limb is large enough to be a tree itself. The trunk is rough, with many folds and fissures. There are many such trees and plantations in Louisiana, and the Cane River area alone is home to a large number of them. If you are ever in central western Louisiana, come to Natchitoches Parish and step back into history.
...............................
This original of this piece was painted in oil on stretched canvas, in an impressionistic style.
