Description
I caught this view while standing in the Rocky Mountains National Park in Colorado. Peering through the trees, you can see the rugged mountains in standing further than they appear. The sky was blue, the clouds were perfect, and the landscape was big. The clear view belied the fact that the mountains were far into the distance.

Until I visited the West, I did not realize how big and how distant everything is. Fields that look as though you could walk across them in an hour actually take the entire day and then some. Mountains that appear to be only a few short miles away prove to be ten times further, and more.

This artwork was painted in oils in an impressionistic style. I especially enjoyed portraying the pine boughs in the upper left. Pine trees have always reminded me of thick, rich velvet. But then there is nothing painting rock--huge, old, beautiful rock. Seemingly it is there forever but the wear and the jagged edges tell you that it is constantly changing.
