Southwestern Night Landscape Rock Ruins

Description
This piece started as another version of the Jemez mission in New Mexico. As I painted, I began adding and changing elements. Soon, I had changed the old cathedral ruins into an ancient wall, which was once a mysterious, castle like structure. The dark blue sky has hints of a starry night.
.................................................
In this piece, the pathway and the rocks lead you into the landscape. There is a tower in the foreground, and more of the wall in the distance. These old ruins appear to be ancient, and are slowly succumbing to the desert. Main colors are blue, yellow, brown, tan, and a bit of green. There is a hint of red in the near rocks and in the foreground. The painting was done in a somewhat impressionist style. At the largest sizes, standing close will give the viewer an abstract effect. Step back, and it all comes together.

Rocks are some of my favorite things to paint. I love the roughness, the smoothness, and the seeming permanence of them. Perhaps that is why I love the Southwest so much.
