In a patriotic scene, a flag hangs from a pole decked in wrought iron at the park at Cane River Lake in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Flowers hang from the pole and lounge chairs and a boat can be seen across the water, which framed by the bridge and the flag pole. This park sits below street level, and features, among other things, a flower garden, benches, and the Roque House, a historical Creole style dwelling.

Natchitoches (NAK-e-tash) is the oldest continual settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. It was named after an Indian tribe. Natchitoches was founded in 1714 by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, to whom large numbers of Louisianians trace our ancestry. A Quebec Frenchman who married a Spanish girl from Mexico, his history is colorful and worth a look.
