Description
In the spring and summer in Louisiana and other southern states, wisteria comes out and shows off in a mighty way. This beauty is somewhat deceptive, because this aggressive plant will take over everything around it. It will take a building apart and has even been known to bring down a tree. It must be pruned vigorously and has more lives than a cat. But there is something that draws me to it anyway. Perhaps it evokes long ago memories of growing up in the south. Come to think of it, I'm still in the South.
..............................
This wisteria was growing on the ground among white clover and other green plants in North Louisiana, part of a wide spread from a renegade bush that had become a thriving system of beautiful invasion. I stood--or maybe I sat--beside the bush with my easel and painted it from life--en plein air. This bush has been cut completely to the ground and, it was thought, destroyed. It always comes back, and at this writing, is alive and well. It will probably run wild with with blossoms for years to come.
