Description
Oakwood Cemetery is filled with beautiful ironwork, old monuments and statues and is known for its interesting and, in some cases, infamous, inhabitants. To name a few, there is the outlaw that was killed by his father-in-law, a Confederate spy, a murdered lady of the night, and many more.
..................................................
On one of the graves is a chain, suspended between two small posts. It is said that these are two wicked men who had no friends but each other. They got into a fight and managed to kill each other. According to the story, they were buried side by side and their coffins were chained together, since they had been together so much in life.
Look up Diamond Bessie, a tragic woman from out of town who was murdered in Jefferson and was laid to rest at Oakwood.
...............................................................
This art piece was painted in oils on stretched canvas. The darkness in the trees lend an air of solemnity, but the statue appears to be looking into the distance, beyond the horizon, and there is hope.
